Continuing our look at Autumn breaks in the UK this time we look at Devon, Dartmouth and Cornwall (even more things to do in Cornwall!) following on from part one Autumn Coastal Breaks – Dorset and Cornwall.
Autumn is the best excuse to get out of the hectic lifestyle and into the fresh and inviting countryside, if only for a few days. Although many holiday destinations close their doors for the autumn and winter breaks after helping thousands enjoy the beautiful summer, a few locations like Devon, Dartmouth and Cornwall keep their beautiful beaches and bracing walks open for everyone to enjoy — even during cooler autumn months.
Devon
Whether you‘re looking to spend the autumn break in the comfort of nature, take a walk through history, stroll on the sandy beaches or enjoy looking at the beautiful sunset from the luxury of your hotel – Devon is the answer to all your autumn break needs, where you can experience the changing seasons in all their glory. Being in the city all the year around, a look at the traditional towns of Devon (Brixham, Paignton, Torquay, and Babbacombe) will let you appreciate the slow pace of village life. Moreover, there are a number of accommodation choices available to you — from 5-star hotels to traditional cottages like The Dairy Farm, from ultra-modern apartments to budget accommodations. And The Salcombe Harbour Hotel – a freshly refurbished beachside hotel — is a perfect place to stay.
In addition to the beautiful hotels, Devon also offers some beautiful gardens and walks. Take a look at The Garden House, where a colourful display of autumn foliage is on display each year!
Dartmouth
Dartmouth is home to some of the most pleasing scenic villages and walks in England. The large sandy beaches of the coast and serene countryside make any visit a memorable one. Take a walk on the riverside and enjoy the gentle breeze, or be adventurous and tread the moorlands of Dartmouth; the wildlife of the region is on par with its outstanding natural beauty. Stay at the Downtown Lodge and enjoy exploring the innumerable coves, cliff-top sceneries and castles. Walk along the River Dart, or drive down to Start Bay or Blackpool Sands and enjoy the great views. Dartmouth has a number of walking trails such as The John Musgrave Heritage Trail, and also offers a selection of hotels — from 5-Star accommodations like The Royal Castle Hotel to affordable Bed and Breakfast places. The Dartmouth Golf and Country Club – perfect for the golfer in you, Browns Hotel – boutique hotel with a bar, and The Two Bridges Hotel – a history-laced 18th Century Country house hotel, are some of what Dartmouth has to offer.
And don’t forget the Dartmouth Food Festival where you can feast on the fresh food and drinks prepared by local farmers. While the season is still young, try to walk along the South West Coast Path and enjoy the cool autumn breeze standing ashore. If history beckons you, then the Dartmouth Castle — a place filled with interesting stories and anecdotes at every turn — is sure to catch your imagination. And if you still want more, head to the Britannia Naval Collage to find out more about Dartmouth’s incomparable Royal Naval heritage!
Cornwall
Cornwall is not only about its warm summer and breezy spring; autumn is often just as wonderful as any other season — if not occasionally better! Make sure you reach Cornwall before the leaves change colour, as you wouldn’t want to miss the wonder of the place in autumn. Enjoy all the spectacular hues of the place, the changing landscape and the ever-inviting locals. There are miles of scenic coastal paths to explore, sweeping gardens to enjoy and woodland trails to experience. Orchard House mystical, magical Cornwall is a celebration in itself.
From the sandy beaches of South Devon to the sprawling gardens of Cornwall, from the beautiful and adventure-rich walking trails of North Devon to the wild camping at Dartmouth, this part of England offers everything you seek during a short autumn break. The place offers great food choices, an excellent selection of accommodation, and the best nature has on offer.
