Visit Oxford

As a city steeped in history, Oxford has a wide range of attractions for visitors of all ages to enjoy. Climb the 99 steps of Carfax Tower to discover the history of the last remaining section of Oxford City Church from 1122. Become a scholar for a day at Bodleian Library, experience life behind bars at Oxford Castle and Prison, or wonder at rare plants in the UK’s oldest Botanical Garden.

If you like museums, then you’ll simply love Oxford. Amongst the most popular are The Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, History of Science Museum, and Pitt Rivers Museum, home to one of the world’s best collections of anthropology and archaeology, including some infamous shrunken heads.

Harry Potter fans can take a walking tour of the parts of Oxford University which were used for Hogwarts in the films. Fans of Colin Dexter’s detective series, including Inspector Morse, Lewis and Endeavour, can take a similar tour of filming locations.

For a break away from the city, drive 20 minutes out of Oxford and you’ll find Blenheim Palace. Famous as the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, this grand country house also features pretty gardens and large areas of parkland to explore.

Party in Oxford

Just as there’s plenty to do by day, there’s also lots to experience in Oxford at night. The city has several theatres including the New Theatre and Oxford Playhouse which stages both British and international drama, dance, music, comedy and poetry. If cinema is more your thing, the Ultimate Picture Palace screens a mix of independent, mainstream and classic films.

Oxford is also home to a large number of pubs and you can even take part in a three-hour tour of the best picks. For any bookworms out there, the Eagle and Child Pub was the favourite hangout for Tolkien and CS Lewis during the 1930s and 40s.

If you’re a fan of 90s alternative bands, Jericho Tavern was the first venue where Radiohead played and it continues to showcase similar artists. Other worthy mentions include Kiss Bar and The Duke of Cambridge for cocktails and Atik for dancing the night away in its 5 rooms of electronic club music.

Hungry after your pub crawl? This unusual evening attraction may be for you. G&D Ice cream cafes are dotted all over Oxford and they stay open until midnight for any late-night snackers who fancy a scoop of ice cream until 11.30pm.
