Where does excellent end and exceptional begin? Probably somewhere around DA14. Yes, this is Bexley, on the edge of London’s lights and sights, but probably not as you know it. What does exceptional look like? It looks like 10,000 square feet of sumptuous comfort for 16 luxury-hunters wrapped in two acres of sculpted walkways.
Mansion in the Meadows takes the idea of luxury and runs fast with it. The floor plan looks like four games of Cluedo all laid out on a huge coffee table. Posh games of Cluedo, naturally, complete with 15-metre heated indoor pool featuring widescreen TV (obviously) and equally wide view onto the magically manicured gardens.
Naturally, you’ve a games room for snooker, pool and darts. Is there underfloor gas heating to warm your toes? Be a shame if there wasn’t. Cooking facilities? Only the best. You’ve got two electric ovens, six gas burners and an island that looks like a small spaceship. Sleep in beamed, beautiful bedrooms with freestanding baths. Sigh a lot.
Two acres of fun, games and serene strolls come delightfully decorated with a modern moat, fountains and Italianate walkways. Wandering and pottering here are best enjoyed with a G and T and good company. Stay out there for table tennis and kicking a ball into the nets with the kids… and the big kids.
Eat al-fresco on the terrace table and chairs and turn your kebabs on the coal barbecue. Wander a little more. Pour another gin. You deserve it.
Everything you do here, and everywhere you go, is warmed by underfloor gas heating. How cosy, and clever, because spaces here in this 10,000-square-foot party palace are cavernous. Mix and mingle with your favourite people in two huge reception rooms over Sky, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video streamed over high-speed broadband.
Make it a night at the movies in the huge-screened cinema room. Feeling at home there? Pull out the sofa bed and catch the early-morning screening. Keep your muscles bulging and your heart beating in the gym, with its bike, multigym and weights, and waste an evening in the games room over snooker, darts and pool.
You’d expect a high-end kitchen, and Mansion in the Meadows delivers, with its space-age island, gas cooker, microwave and American style fridge/freezer. Fill it with yummy goodies from Waitrose and Cake Box. Cook on two electric ovens with six gas burners, or just flat-out refuse, if only once. Our pro chefs will be happy to pull their whites on.
Al-fresco dining fan? The moated gardens are a rather lovely spot for dinner and the coal barbecue’s just waiting for your shish-kebabs and sausages. Still not up for skewer-turning? Consider takeaways from SJ Chicken for peri-peri and halal or Cray Bites for burgers, bacon and rotisserie chicken.
Head out to Seven Stars in Sidcup for traditional pub fare and a lively beer garden, or to Guy Earl of Warwick for beef-and-ale pie or chicken katsu curry. Try The Tailor’s Chalk for Wetherspoon’s finest breakfasts. Or pile into Red Barn in Bexley Heath for cheesy chicken and chorizo croquettes or mixed grills.
Restaurants around these parts include La Stalla for stroganoff, spaghetti carbonara or veal escalope with spaghetti Bolognese. Head down to Bengal Tandoori for garlic chicken tikka, shashlick, Madras and other Asian faves. Or try I love Gyoza for Japanese sushi and other Asian-style delicacies.
