Ready for a new exercise routine? Or looking for a holiday with an outdoorsy twist? Either way, wild swimming could be the perfect activity for you.
What is wild swimming?
Wild swimming is any kind of swimming that’s done outdoors and in a natural body of water, not a human-made swimming pool. So, you could wild swim in:
- Rivers
- Lakes
- The ocean.
However, the term wild swimming is most often used to refer to swimming in rivers and lakes – inland bodies of water.
How did wild swimming become popular?
Wild swimming is nothing new, of course!
But it was the lockdowns way back in 2020-21 that really brought wild swimming back to the public eye.
That’s because wild swimming was an activity that people could do even when public facilities were closed. And since it takes place outdoors, there was less risk of transmitting the infection.
But long after all the closures and restrictions, the popularity of wild swimming has remained high.
What are the benefits of wild swimming?
There are plenty of reasons why people love wild swimming.
One is that outdoor bodies of water are usually cold. People find a plunge into cold water to be physically revitalising. Some even say it’s improved their mental health.
The beauty of outdoor surroundings is also a plus. Not to mention that many people like the camaraderie from wild swimming in groups.
Tips on safety
Before you decide to wild swim, check that it’s safe to go in the water in your chosen location. Make sure that you’re legally permitted to be there, too. Also, don’t swim alone – cold water can be a shock to the body. Be sure to bring warm clothing to wrap yourself up warm after you swim.
