Visiting Whitby immerses you in both coastal and countryside experiences. The historic seaport itself has a fascinating history and provides a beautiful spot to watch the fishing boats bring in the latest catch. Further along, you can also enjoy the sandy shoreline – it’s perfect for sandcastles and paddling in the waters.
The River Esk flows through the town and adjoins both east and west of the town by the well-known ‘swing-bridge’. Here you can explore the area’s history and heritage and visit its main shopping streets and fish market.
Going further afield, Whitby sits within the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast area. This is a protected spot with some of the highest cliffs in England. Moving along the coastline takes you to other charming towns and villages, such as Staithes and Robin’s Hood Bay.
If you want to admire more of the Yorkshire countryside, going inland takes you into the North York Moors National Park. This beautiful area is ideal for walking adventures to enjoy its unspoilt splendour. Plus, why not hop aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Whitby station to admire the scenery, including one stop you might recognise from the Harry Potter movies.
Unique things to do in Whitby
The town of Whitby is steeped in history, and there are plenty of cultural and heritage sites to explore during your stay. The town’s links to Captain Cook offer a fascinating insight into the famous explorer’s life in this area, and you can check it all out at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. This spot also inspired numerous literacy tales, including Bram Stoker’s Dracula – there’s even a Dracula Experience along the seafront, which takes you through the story and its connections to the town.
Another draw to the area is Whitby’s charming boutique shops and unique streets. Here you can learn about the famous Whitby Jet jewellery, and if you’re self-catering in Whitby, why not stop of eats at one of its many renowned seafood restaurants – and of course, don’t forget to try the fish and chips!
Sitting above the town, you’ll see Whitby Abbey. If you’re feeling energetic, the 199 steps leading to the Benedictine ruins will certainly be worth the climb.
