The sound of silence

Walk your dogs where Evelyn Waugh wrote Brideshead Revisited. Park Farmhouse, sleeping 20 in the heart of the Cotswolds, is private and enchanted, magical and mystical. Listen to the sound of silence as you gather beneath wonky beams and wallow in the hot tub, play croquet, forage in the woods and fly falcons in the clean air.

Magical and mystical

The Cotswold trail walks are perfect for dogs here where Evelyn Waugh wrote Brideshead Revisited. The grounds at Park Farmhouse are private and enchanted, magical and mystical, and the views melt into a pretty parabola that meets the woodlands beyond. Listen, what can you hear? That’s right. It’s the sound of silence.

The period charm here in Dursley pops from every wonky beam, every creaky floorboard and every original flagstone. But families, friends and colleagues of up to 20 won’t want for modern comforts. A double range cooker sits at the heart of the country farmhouse kitchen and the en-suite bedrooms are cool and contemporary beneath the beams.

Explore the Cotswold Way and the Lantern Way and take lunch in The Old Spot Inn. Return home to a wooded valley beneath the Cotswold escarpment, a private estate where the snuffling of the Muntjac deer and the hoot of the tawny owl might be all you hear. That, and the crackling of burning wood and the sighs of blissful contentment.

While your burgers turn on the coal barbecue, discover the hidden tunnels in the landscaped folly gardens, wallow in the bubbling heat of the hot tub, and play croquet on the lawn and table tennis under the sunny skies. Forage in the woods, fly falcons in the clean air, picnic by the lake. Return the keys if you possibly can.

Hot tub, gardens and grounds

Pack a picnic and walk one mile to the estate lake. A mile? Yes, grounds here are extensive – 300 acres extensive. Walk your dogs in the woods. Forage for your supper. Chill in the hot tub. Play croquet on the lawn and table tennis in the clean air. Barbecue on the terrace, fly falcons by day and grill marshmallows by night around the firepit.

You might want to spend your whole stay out in the gardens listening to the sound of silence and watching the swoop of the red kites. But you’d be missing out on a beautifully restored period property full of original beams and local stone. Throw another log on the fire and cosy up in one of the large sitting rooms.

After a day on the estate or a night in The Old Spot, get together for the full Sky package or Netflix. Set the soundtrack to your stay on the Sonos and raid the full bookcase for some magical me-time. Ask us about toys and books for kids. Or try The Bell at Sapperton, described by The Times as idyllic and serving local comfort classics.

A gem of a farmhouse! No issues during our stay as the first guests. Impeccably presented with beautiful furnishings. Situated on a private country estate, the trails were perfect for dog walks. Peaceful and secluded - definitely coming back! - Simon
