Country kids

Crashed jeeps and mysterious islands form just some of the backdrop to Congo Falls Adventure Golf, 18 epic holes of crazy-golf fun. Or try Chew Valley Animal Park, a farm with so many animals it’s a fully licensed zoo. They include turtles, macaws and wallabies you can hand-feed. Don’t forget to feed yourself in the café.

Discover even more about Bristol on Pirate Pete’s Walking Tour on the harbourside haunts of the swashbucklers of yesteryear.

Head to Mendips Raceway for stock car and banger racing. Or step into the world of Ancient Rome at the historic Roman Baths – meet a slave girl, stonemasons and other costumed characters. Stay in town for No 1 Royal Crescent, a wonderful museum set up as life would have been in the late 18th century.

For the grown ups

Chew Magna’s within striking distance of some of Somerset’s finest features. Get out for the day to gorgeous gorges and caves at Cheddar and Wookey Hole. See the cathedral city of Wells, historic Glastonbury and its tor, and Bristol, home of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Not bad for a village of just 1000 residents.

Head into Bristol for a packet-boat ride on open-topped craft that tour the docks or meander down to Beese’s Tea Gardens with a one-hour stop for refreshments. Take the Blackbeard to Banksy walking tour. And see Brunel’s SS Great Britain, the longest passenger ship in the world from 1845 to 1854.

Move along to Bath to see the abbey, home of Christian worship for over 1200 years. Potter over the Pulteney Bridge, one of the city’s most beautiful sights, dip in and out of the little shops and take a 25-minute boat trip along the river. If you’re on a hop-on, hop-off bus tour, hop off at the Roman Baths, home of fascinating Roman legacies.

Stick around in Bath to walk the Royal Crescent, 30 Grade-1 listed houses and the greatest example of Georgian architecture in England, and to explore the Circus and learn about this architectural masterpiece. Wrap up the day with a potter down to the Stoke Inn for pint or a Prosecco.

Kick your way to victory at Ashton Court Golf Course on a fast-paced game of footgolf. Go pub-hopping around Bristol with a local guide on a craft-beer tour that takes in the city’s best sights. Or enjoy a mystery self-guided craft-beer tour featuring a map, pen and paper, snacks and beer tokens.

Max out the mixology with a cocktail masterclass at The Florist, mixing a Flojito, a florist Pornstar and a Heart Throb. Have Edam good day out on the Bristol Cheese Crawl, encompassing the finest sights of the city. If you Camembert that, how about a magician show at the Smoke and Mirrors theatre pub?

Pamper yourself on a spa day or a seasonal scrub and soothe at Bannatyne’s in Bristol. Take an urban quad-bike trek around the city with Bristol Activity Centre. Try to survive a horror escape-room experience in Bristol’s old Crown Court prison cells, which date back to 1867. Or take the Somerset Challenge – like the Olympics plus cider.

How about a little zorb football? Strap yourself into your own bubble for a crazy twist on the beautiful game. Take aim and fire with Safe and Sound Clay Pigeon Shooting. Then bring the pulse rate down with afternoon tea at the Ivy Clifton Brasserie, washed down with salted caramel espresso martinis.
