Enjoy fresh ingredients? They don’t come much fresher than fruit from the orchard, if you can find it, fresh eggs from the chickens and vegetables from the kitchen garden and polytunnel. Pile them into the pot yourself or call on Jemima and her team from Taste Buds or Food by Doug Grant while you swim or take on the kids at tennis.
Eat around the 12-seat dining table or outdoors under the awning in the south-coast sunshine. Load up the gas barbecue with meat from Tessier’s butchers, Sainsbury’s and Runcton Farm Shop with wine from Majestic. Takeaways? Try Thyme and Chillies for Indian, Ocean Village for Chinese or Harry’s for good honest fish and chips.
Head out to The Lamb Inn, an 18th-century watering hole offering chargrilled sirloin steak or south coast fish stew. Try The Ship Inn in Itchenor, a village pub with a modern fresh-fish menu and live music, or take a place by the fire at The Crown and Anchor, a cosy place with a fine line in local seafood.
Get some sea air in your lungs at Billy’s on the Beach, serving breakfasts, kippers, smoked salmon and more right on Bracklesham Bay. For a lively serving of tapas, head to Viento Delevante in Chichester, or tuck into the 25-mile menu at the famous farm-to-table Pig in the South Downs.
Embedded within 100 acres of greenery and wild woodland on the South Downs, Hidden Orchard delivers deep sleep ably aided and abetted by Egyptian-cotton linens and mattress toppers. There’s room here for 12 adults and two children with overflow accommodation in cots or in the Barn Loft for up to six more.
The master bedroom offers a kingsize bed and en-suite with rolltop bath and shower, plus garden views. Bedroom two is also a kingsize with front-garden views, while bedroom three offers a double and a view over the orchard. Pick bedroom four for a kingsize bed, rolltop bath and rear-garden views.
Bedroom five comes with a kingsize bed, washbasin and a view of the rear garden, bedroom six is a double and bedroom seven a twin. You’ll find a luxury bathroom on each floor.
