Wellbeing and warm hearts

This is the stuff memories are made of. Granary Grove Farm in North Yorkshire’s Wolds is sprawling, special and specifically wonderful for children and dogs. Hens and adults not fussed about bedtime will also be smiling. Sleeping up to 14 wrapped in paddocks and farmland, it comes with all the bells and whistles plus a couple of hot tubs.

Those hot tubs sit within chatting distance beneath the big starry Yorkshire sky. You’re close by the hauntingly beautiful North York Moors, yet within a chariot ride of the Roman city of York. Hunker down among the exposed beams in front of the toasty logburner, pour a Nespresso and get the telly on.

Competitive dads will love the games room with its table tennis, pool, darts and smart TV, and kids will love playing on the swings, slide and monkey bars. Your dog will love the enclosed grounds, and everyone will love the sense of relaxed luxury. This is a world of leather sofas and logs, wellbeing and warm hearts.

Pile your sausages and steaks from Trotter’s onto the gas barbecue. Then simmer in the tubs and stay out past bedtime around the firepit, swapping stories and marmalising marshmallows. If you really must go to bed, you’ll sleep like a log, wake to the farms morning call, smile and nod off again. At least for this week, all is right with the world.

Hot tubs, garden & grounds

Large gardens set in eight acres of land include a field you can use – maybe for bouncy castles? Kids can watch an afternoon zip by on the swings, slide, goalposts and monkey bars. Grown-ups will love the landscaped seclusion and the two hot tubs within chatting distance of each other.

Eat out on the west-facing patio and watch the sun set across the paddocks and farmland over barbecue burgers and bangers. Let your dogs explore the enclosed garden. Pass the time messing with pétanque and the pizza oven. Wrap up the day around the firepit. Drink Prosecco as chilled as you are.

Living spaces

There’s a warm welcome inside Granary Grove Farm’s generous spaces. A biomass burner heats the main house and games room, so hot water gushes from the taps and warm air radiates throughout. If your toes weren’t already toasty enough, cosy up around the logburner.

Kick back among the exposed beams in the sitting room and get the telly on for a family film night. Or get competitive in the separate games room, an adjacent barn that comes with table tennis, pool and darts, plus a telly of its own. We’ll forgive you if you never return to the main house. Clear it with the family first.

Cooking & dining

You’ll get the whole clan around the chunky dining-room table or out by the setting sun on the west-facing terrace. Feed them from the electric range oven and six-burner induction hob, pizza oven or barbie. Or don’t. Heh, you’re on holiday. So subcontract the cooking to the pros from At the Dinner Party, By Molly or Willows Catering.

Take it easy with takeaways from Pizzaland, China China, or The East for pizza, kebabs and chicken. Head out for fish and chips to Harper’s, or for afternoon tea or to raid the bakery at Sally Middlewood’s. Stock up the fridge/freezer with deliveries from Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s and fizz from We Love Wine.

Pop in for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner (or all four) at The Farrier in Cayton. Make it an evening a la carte and enjoy black truffle mushroom mac and cheese or Yorkshire Wold chicken breast. Or head to The Coachman in Snainton for Whitby scampi or Katsu chicken.

At The Star Inn in Weaverthorpe, sample great pub grub and a nice beer garden, or try FortySix in Malton for small plates, brunch or Sunday lunch. Up in Pickering, Spice 4 You is good for traditional Indian meals, either in-house or on a takeaway basis. For an all-day breakfast and nice pot of tea, it’s The Yorkshire Tea Rooms.
