Families: what are you celebrating? Age ending in zero? Big anniversary? One look at Eryri Manor’s ageless, timeless, peerless beauty and you’ll be looking for any old excuse to head to North Wales. Quick, think of something. Cricket team got promotion? Having messy building work done at home, which you’ll arrange ASAP?
Sleeping 18, Eryri Manor is immaculate. Eryri is Welsh for Snowdonia, and that’s right where you’ll be. In the heart of the mountains within striking distance of the summit of Cader Idris. But this is no bothy. It’s a Grade II-listed gem thoroughly modernised and restored while retaining every last speck of its original charm and cheer.
Cook, or be cooked for, in the stunning kitchen. Eat in the formal dining room in front of the original fireplace, chill in your choice of reception rooms with Netflix on the telly (bring your password) and your own handpicked hotel guests for company. Cartref moethus yng Nghymru ar gyfer arhosiad teuluol perffaith… as they say around here.
Do you even need a garden? The blue-tipped peaks of Cader Idris, Aran Fawddwy and Rhinog Fach, embracing glass-surfaced lakes, rise all around. With a little adjustment for scale, this could be Canada. But yes, Eryri Manor offers a lovely enclosed garden.
Harmonising local stone walling, new paving, wooden decking and pooch-friendly astroturf (dogs by request), this is the place to stare at the views through the conifers or bubble under the stars in the hot tub. Towel off and enjoy a little (liquid) table tennis under the covered pergola. Or just the liquid.
Eryri Manor is a 16th-century Grade II-listed manor house elegantly restored into an icon of modern luxury. It’s the perfect, picturesque setting for large family gatherings. Thick carpets, deep skirts, wood panelling, sash windows and spotlights abound. These are the perfect spaces for wine to flow as freely as the conversation.
Pick from two generous reception rooms. Settle back on squishy sofas and bring your passwords for plundering Netflix and Amazon Prime Video on the smart TVs. Or head up to the attic games room to twist the night away on the table football. Keep your social feed green with envy over the Sky broadband.
The kitchen’s a jaw-dropper, with its French-blue cabinets, breakfasting island and electric oven with induction hob. Cram the fridge/freezer with stuff from Camlan farm shop, with fridges groaning with Welsh butter, free-range eggs, gammon, pork, sausages, bacon, pork pies, lamb and mutton, plus jams, preserves and chutneys.
Prefer to be pampered? Get your cossie on and hang around in the hot tub while our pro chefs from DineIndulge deliver a one-off celebration or fully catered break. Takeaways? Consider Dolgellau Kebab Shop (pizza too), Lemon Grass for Asian, or Chinese Cottage.
Pop out to The Royal Ship in Dolgellau for steak and unicorn ale pie or homity pie (no, we don’t know either). Try The Stag Inn for imaginatively branded pizza. Eat at The Torrent Walk Hotel on chunky pie of the day, then enjoy the Wednesday-night open mic in the narrow street with festoon lights. On a warm night, you could be on the Med.
For five-star plant-based dining, consider Foxglove in Barmouth. Head to the prom for Celtic Cabin, serving roasted sweet-potato falafel or Mexican-style slow-cooked pulled pork. Try Y Sospan (guess what that means) for ribeye steak or chicken wrapped in streaky bacon. Or afternoon tea at the Gwyndy Tearooms.
