On and around the Estate

Walk to the beach, it’s less than two miles away, and there is a network of walks around the Estate to enjoy.

The quiet roads around the Estate make this a great area to cycle. The national cycle route one goes through the middle of the Estate.

You can enjoy some classic Northumbrian country pursuits during your stay. Give fishing a go at the lake below the mill and in the burn that runs down to the sea.

The surrounding area is a renowned location for birdwatching with a wide variety of woodland, farmland and coastal birds.

Explore the sandy beaches and fishing villages of the Northumbrian coast. Dedicated watersports enthusiasts and the casual visitor alike will find that Beadnell Bay has everything on offer, from surf lessons to diving. You might even get to see a seal or two.

Drive over the hill on the back road from North Charlton. Visit the castle at Chillingham, the gardens and the Wild Cattle that have run wild in the park for hundreds of years. Get the kids excited about history and take the steam railway to Etal Castle and visit Heatherslaw Mill for the day. Just don’t forget your picnic hamper.

For a little more action Adventure Northumberland is for you, based in Alnwick, they can organise rock climbing, kayaking, coasteering, abseiling and surfing all within a few miles of the house. Take a boat trip around Farne Island or Coquet Island to see the puffins, terns, ducks and seals.

For the Grown-ups

Enjoy the on site lake with an afternoon fishing or get some tuition from James Armstrong, he is a very knowledgeable fishing guide and instructor. He can take you to the fishery at Chatton or to rivers and lakes nearby.

Dunstanburgh Castle nestles in Embleton Bay near Alnwick and boasts to being one of the finest golf courses in the area. There are holes to challenge golfers of all skill levels.

Walk from the fishing village of Craster (famous for its kippers) past the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, to lunch at The Ship Inn, Low Newton.

Enjoy fresh seafood at the Potted Lobster in Bamburgh, after an evening walk on the beach by the iconic castle.
