Dancing, dining and dogs

Stare at Blackdown Grange’s lake fountains from the pergola, swim in the heated pool, find a late night haven in the hot tub. Risk it all in the roulette room, get competitive in the games room, then clear the decks and dance till you drop. Burn wood, dine decadently, walk the dogs over the Somerset hills, play croquet on the lawn.

Suntrap swimming and hot-tub stargazing

The pergola sits on a deck in the middle of the ornamental lake, garden chairs waiting for you to stare at the fountains, ducks and reed beds. G and T, maybe? Or go big and take the rowing boat out on the larger lake. This is Blackdown Grange, sleeping 24 in a dozen bedrooms in the warm lee of Somerset’s Blackdown Hills.

There’s no shortage of wet and dry entertainment here in a Victorian country house and annex nestled in 22 acres of grounds as English as the croquet you can play on the lawns. And pile into the heated pool for suntrap swimming in the walled garden. When you’re done, stare at the stars from the courtyard hot tub.

Stay out for the giant Jenga, football and giant pick-up sticks. Wander the woodlands, orchard and paddocks. Pop in to the coach house for table tennis, snooker and table football, then clear the decks after dinner and dance till you drop. Finish the night with box sets and beverages in the TV lounge.

Inside, eat, cook, play, have fun. Burn wood, chat, risk it all in the roulette room, pile around the giant dining table for decadent dining, fill the larder fridges with goodies from Gaia Garden Deli. Bring your hens or stags or bring your wedding guests. Or just bring the generations, your dogs, your wellies and your wonderment.

Pool, hot tub, gardens and grounds

Pick from two lakes and put your feet up. Sit beneath the pergola on garden chairs and stare at the fountains, the reeds and the ducks, or explore the larger lake by rowing boat. Splash away an afternoon in the heated pool, in the suntrap walled garden. Soak away the evening in the seven-seater courtyard hot tub.

Play croquet, giant Jenga, pick-up sticks or football on the lawns. Potter the landscaped grounds, with their woodlands, lakes, orchard, and paddocks. Throw your steaks on the courtyard barbecue or take it easy in the pool and pass the whites to the pro chefs for an indulgent soiree.

Living spaces

Blackdown Grange brings generations together across the main house and cottage, and provides breathing space for when they want to be apart. Pick from a drawing room, sitting room, den and games room, and play family catch-up over burning logs or a spinning roulette wheel.

You’ll find the games room in the coach house next door, scene of many a late-night snooker, table tennis or table football world championship, followed by a Strictly face-off in the cavernous space once the decks have been cleared. Bring your passwords to stream your favourites over the Chess Wi-Fi on the two smart TVs.

What people say

We had an amazing stay at Blackdown Grange from start to finish! We loved the layout of the houses, we were a group of 20 and it never felt crowded. Having dinner around the enormous dining table was also a highlight. Lots of laughs were had in the games room playing a variety of games and singing karaoke. All in all, our group had only positive feedback and we would stay again in a heartbeat. Thank you!! - Meena
Amazing venue, accommodation and grounds which makes it perfect for weddings and holidays alike! Guests enjoyed all of the amenities offered including swimming pool, hot tub, lake with row boats, garden games, table tennis, pool table, and extensive grounds. Should the weather not be great the house is plenty big enough to house everyone complete with cosy fires. We would 100% recommend this venue. - Paige
Blackdown Grange is such a beautiful place to stay. The main house is wonderfully set-up for large groups. There is so much space in the house and it's brilliantly well-equipped. The rooms are all lovely and have their own feel and style to them. The cottage is equally lovely. And the grounds are spectacular. Lots of lovely places to walk, explore or boat! For us, we wanted a venue which was relaxed and had the space to entertain friends and family over a long weekend. It was the perfect choice and we can't wait to have another excuse to come back and enjoy it all over again. - Helen
