Country kids

Book an Experience Day at Mere Down Falconry, fly a barn owl, meet hawks and owls, and watch a peregrine falcon take flight. Meet African painted dogs, lions, cheetahs, giraffes and more on safari at Longleat, then tour the house, get lost in the maze and ride the railway by the lake.

The hills and horses await at Quantock Trekking, as do the wall, high ropes and crazy golf at Vivary Adventure Centre. At Lazer Space, smoke, towers, mazes and strobe lights are the order of the day. Love the sound of leather on willow? Take a tour of the Somerset Cricket Museum.

Kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard on the River Tone with Channel Adventure Taunton. Discover temples, lakes and woodland trails at Hestercombe Gardens. Swim wild at Wiveliscombe Pool. Or head to the Museum of Somerset to find an under-floor plesiosaur and the country’s largest collection of Roman coins.

Fan of animal farms? They don’t get much better than Pennywell. Walk with ponies, ride the train, feed the deer, pet the pigs, and watch the goat-milking and the ferret- racing. Or take a five-mile ride through The Mendips on the East Somerset Railway, check out the signal box, see the museum – then go again for free!

For the grown ups

What’s Wincanton famous for? How about the racecourse, home of the Kingwell Hurdle, Badger Chase and Boxing Day racing. Get your glad rags on and get down there for a flutter. Stick around in summer for the outdoor cinema and play the nine-hole golf course in the middle of it all.

Walk Glastonbury Tor and come in July for the ultimate festival. Take your dog through Beacon Hill Woods or admire the views of Somerset from the top of Burrow Mump. Meet the grey herons at RSPB Swell Wood, and merlins and marsh harriers at WWT Steart marshes. Or climb to South Cadbury Castle Hill Fort with its Arthurian myths.

Take some scrumpy home for after supper when you take a tour of Sheppy’s Cider visitor centre. Venture into British viticulture with a tour and tasting at Aldwick Estate. Watch the cricket at the County Ground. Or take a march through Somerset’s military history at the Military Museum.

Ride the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal towpath with cycles hired from Parret Bike Trails. Take afternoon tea at Fyne Court and wander the wild garden. Vulture the culture at Brewhouse Theatre. As darkness drops, drive into Bath for a drop of wine and shared charcuterie, or cocktails at The Hideout or Circo.
