Just a 10 minute taxi ride from the city, Welfield looks like the sort of place a well-heeled physician might have lived in bygone times. These days, its purpose is a little less formal. Sleeping 23 and close to Liverpool’s football grounds and the Aintree racecourse, it’s a great base for a knees-up.
Welfield’s a terrace, so don’t go too overboard on site, but on your doorstep sits one of the UK’s leading pleasure grounds. Liverpool’s a 24-hour city these days, an ever-turning wheel of fun and frolics fuelled by cocktails, casinos and clubs (of both the night and football kind).
When you eventually roll in to bed, you might never want to emerge. Six bedrooms come piled high with Hilton-standard singles and doubles. Stream Sky TV on wifi, scrub up in two power showers, shop at Sainsbury’s around the corner, take a taxi straight to the heart of the action. You’re well-placed for some serious fun.
The real pleasure grounds here are out among the lights and sights of downtown Liverpool. But that’s not to say your celebrations can’t spill outdoors. Just keep it quiet after nine to keep the neighbours sweet.
There’s a neat, well-kept yard that’s shaded by trees. Pop out on a summer evening for drinks around the tables and chairs, or eat al-fresco and keep the mood going.
Of course, you’ll spend most of your time out painting the town red (or blue, depending on your football team preference), but it’s nice to come back to somewhere that feels like home. And with a sizeable lounge, Welfield doesn’t disappoint.
Park yourself on the sofas (that convert to beds later), pour yourself a Peroni or a Prosecco and settle back for a bit of blatant banter. Two wall-mounted flat-screen 42” TVs come with Freeview and Catch-Up. If you want to catch the match on Sky, tap into the fast EE broadband and get streaming.
Takeaways might seem like the order of the day for stags and hens, and local outlets Al Baraka and New Lorens won’t disappoint. However, if you want to do it your way, you’ll get all the help you need from the modern, galley-style fitted kitchen complete with dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and, of course, toaster.
Once you’ve made use of the electric oven, gas hob and microwave, you can eat around the dining tables, with seating for 20, without ever taking your eyes off the wall-mounted TV – essential if there’s a big match on.
Grab some great food in the Georgian Quarter from Papillon, serving tomahawk pork, grilled salmon fillets or Thai red curry. Visit the highly rated Blackburne Pub and Eatery for great service, scallops and smokey burgers, or Frederiks for traditional stone baked Neapolitan pizzas.
The city’s the place for dishes from every corner of the world. Try Indian street food at Mowgli, or regular Indian at Saffron or Yukti. Eat Italian at Amalia or Villa Romana, Vietnamese at Pho, or Chinese at Tai Pan. When only battered cod and chips will do, The Walton Chippy can’t be beaten.
No shortage of beds here but this is no case of quantity over quality. These are high-class bedrooms with Hilton-standard beds, feature fireplaces, crisp cotton sheets and agreeable décor. Choose from 15 singles and three large doubles across six bedrooms.
Bedrooms one, two, three, five and six each come with three singles, while bedroom four sleeps six in three doubles. Two large shower rooms are yours for freshening up. Need instant extra accommodation? The seats in the lounge convert to single sofa beds.
