The Court House

Wellacres House

The Court House Stables in the heart of the Cotswolds has certainly got it and has decided to flaunt it. Built in the grounds of the lavish and luxurious Court House, it behaves like the show-off little sister across all three of its components: the Stables (sleeping six), Green Retreat (for two) and Barn and Spa (for four).
This is boutique hotel-like beauty (with great guests) and you’re going to take some persuading to leave the spa area. Screened by high private hedging and pergola, the Jacuzzi, loungers, outdoor furniture and deck create a zen-like presence. So bring your meditation cushion. Or just a cold, fruity cocktail.
In The Stables, you’ll chuck your logs in the woodburner, luxuriate in the freestanding bedroom tub, and dilly-dally forever in the lovely rainshower. Cook on the range, eat all together around the extending table, watch Netflix in bed, hire bikes on site, revel in the dizzy opulence of the furnishings, vow to hide on departure day.
The Court House Stables’ big sister, The Court House, surrounds itself with four acres of prime Cotswold real estate, so silence here in its grounds is golden. Eat out on the terrace by the Stables beneath the awnings and the giant Cotswold skies, top up your wine, consider another dip in the hot tub.
And why not? There’s a zen-like, spiritual calm to the high-hedged, pergola-covered spa area. You might not find the meaning of life among the bubbling waters of the hot tub or soaking up the sun on the day beds, but you’ll have fun chinwagging over a glass of fizz in delightful surroundings.
Plenty space for lazing and lounging, and in some comfort. The Court House Stables is the sibling of the Court House and spaces here follow the same pattern of rich, sumptuous luxury. All three buildings ladle on the glitz and bling, with studded fabrics, leather sofas, gilt mirrors and oodles of chrome.
TVs in The Stables can be found in the bedrooms. Instead, centre-stage in The Stables’ living area is a woodburner (who needs a Firestick?). So load up your logs – your first basket is free – set the channel to hot and switch on the chatter or games. There’s high-speed internet for dipping into your devices.
The Barn living room is a snug space with an opulent feel. Settle down with fizz and popcorn for an evening of Netflix or Prime in front of the large-screen wall TV. The Green Retreat offers a cosy sofa and large-screen TV to snuggle in front of.
You’ll get everyone around the extending table in The Stables for sociable suppers. Otherwise, The Barn and Spa seats four and the Green Retreat two, around an intimate small table designed for gazing into each other’s eyes. Cook on gas range cookers with electric fan ovens in the Stables and Barn, and the electric oven and hob in the Retreat.
Eating al-fresco? The Stables brings the inside out, with a decked, split-level courtyard terrace roofed by giant awnings. Get together, eat, drink fizz, be merry. And if you’re looking for a night off, let us know and we’ll call up our chefs for anything from a simple buffet to a fully catered break. They’ll even deal with the dishes afterwards.
Eat out at The Falcon, overlooking the church, or The Oak, serving real ale, cider and locally sourced grub in a traditional country-pub setting with a beer garden. Or call in at The Waypoint at the golf club for dry-aged longhorn beef, aromatic duck or torched buffalo chicken.
St Michael’s Bistro and Restaurant overlooks the yew-dappled churchyard and promises authentic dishes lovingly prepared in-house and served in front of the woodburning stove. Or push the boat out and book in advance for Michelin-starred Le Champignon Sauvage. Braised ox cheek, anyone?
In the serene grounds of The Court House, not much in the way of noise penetrates the stone walls of The Court House Stables. Pick from three buildings offering three different experiences and sleeping 12 in total.
The Stables provides three sumptuous bedrooms. The Hayloft comes with kingsize bed, romantic garden entrance room and en-suite shower room. The Saddle is a larger, light-filled room with a superking bed and en-suite shower room. The Velux window comes with electric blind. The romantic Bridle offers a superking with clawfoot bath.
The Barn and Spa has two bedrooms, one a superking and the other a twin that can also work as a kingsize, thanks to the wonders of zip-and-link. You’ll share a large bathroom and additional shower room.
The Green Retreat is a lovers’ den with a superking bed. Slide open the patio doors at the foot of the bed and slip out to the courtyard garden to launch your Cotswolds day with hot coffee and buttered croissants.
