As you step into the light-drenched hallway of Strode House, you’ll feel your shoulders drop as relaxation envelops you. This gorgeous Georgian gem is an elegant family hub where you’ll instantly feel at home. Understated elegance is the key here, so gather with loved ones to create fabulous shared memories.

Ideally suited for catching up, making time and taking over, there’s space and sophistication in grand abundance. Family feasts are a communal affair where there can never be too many cooks – there’s plenty of space for many hands to make light work here!

Retire to the classic vintage leather sofa and arm chairs and break out the Cluedo. Let the kids take over the games room, where they can kick back on bean bags, sprawl on the sofa with a book, or battle over table football.

Lofty ceilings echo with laughter and when it’s time to turn in, the unashamedly elegant bedrooms with crisp white sheets beckon. From the grand facade to the exquisite interiors, this stately pad ticks all the right boxes. Discover Devon, or do little. You’re ideally placed for a busy break, or simply a break.

Gardens and grounds

Sweep down the stone steps before setting your pulse racing with a kick-about on the lawn. There’s always the option of a more genteel game of croquet – punctuated by a restorative jug of Pimm’s, naturally.

The outdoor table tennis is the setting for many a fiercely fought family tournament where the young can take on the not-quite-so-young.

Wander woodland paths and explore the tree-lined trails that meander their way through 2.5 acres of grounds. Gnarly branches are begging to be climbed by budding knights and fledgling fairies, who can escape dragons by taking to the rope swings.

Soak up the sun and observe the happy scene from the terrace. Take time to appreciate the gift of great company and soak up every precious moment. Sunrises and sunsets seem made just for you, so settle in and embrace the peaceful ambience.

Living spaces

Gather together, or find a quiet corner – whatever your mood, Strode House lends itself perfectly to relaxed family time. Grab the papers and a pot of tea or get competitive at the card table over a game of poker and some friendly banter.

Sink into the leather sofa or armchairs in the inner hall, where the warmth of the log burner creates a toasty atmosphere ready for late nights of conversation and cosy mugs of hot chocolate.

Hang out in the dining kitchen and chat to the kids perched at the breakfast bar – that’s assuming they haven’t taken themselves off to the well-stocked playroom to empty the plentiful toy baskets… again.

Dive into a good book, or flick through the extensive film options. You’ve plenty of scope for a movie night with hundreds of DVDs and Sky Movies to choose from. Or simply stick some tunes on at the iPod docking station to create whatever mood takes your fancy. Remind the younger generation that the greatest entertainment requires no handset and involve everyone in an animated game of charades.

Cooking and dining

The dining kitchen is the social heart of this home, with a capacious breakfast bar for grabbing a quick bite or preparing a feast, so pull up a perch to chop, slice and peel together!

There are two electric ovens and a huge hob for cooking up a storm, so rustle up a full English or pop on a batch of scones. There’s absolutely no escaping the lure of Devonshire clotted cream, so stock up locally and enjoy decadent cream teas in the comfort of your own (holiday) home.

With space around the table for 14, multi-generational feasts are well catered for, whether it’s you or someone else preparing them. Two Birds Kitchen can satisfy diverse tastes whether you’re craving a Persian supper party or an Italian al-fresco lunch. Enjoy a formal celebration, or simply bond over bacon butties – there are no rules here.

Throw together a spontaneous picnic and head for the gardens, or take to the terrace to soak up the views. You’ll find plenty of farm shops, delis and artisan bakeries to tempt you with takeaway treats, so you’ll never be short of nibbles. When you fancy a treat, why not try the Schoolhouse at Mothecombe.

Serene sophistication must surely have been the design brief in the seven gorgeous bedrooms. This country house has no runt to its litter, with four Super King beds, one Twin room, one Single room and a Single and Bunk room all as tastefully furnished and generously sized as each other.

Crisp white sheets, downy duvets and cushions and throws aplenty will tempt you to hushed rest and divine dreams. Modern bathrooms offer walk-in showers and period free-standing baths for luxuriating soaks.

Survey the estate through the classical sash windows and see what wildlife you can observe from your restful retreat. Whichever room you choose, you’ll be in no rush to leave it come morning.

From the lure of the bunk beds to the hidden adventures waiting to be discovered in the grounds, the youngest guests will have plenty to tempt and to tire them.

Outside, a new world of exploration awaits. Search for treasure, collect bugs or fight armies. Run wild, live free and create memories that will be stored forever. Here, discovery and enjoyment have no boundaries. When stamina wanes, head inside for comforting cookies, and turn on the vast 46” TV or hand over the iPad and laptop and let them flop on the bean bags.

There’s a games room groaning with toys, books and games as well as a table football table. You’ll need to give ample warning of mealtimes, as no one will be in any hurry to pause the championship decider match.

If you’re bringing the smallest of guests, there’s no need to worry about overloading the car – there’s a cot, linen and high chair on hand right here, so your little ones will feel right at home.
