Or find answers on the heath, in the historic squares and in the town’s nooks and crannies on the Petersfield Spy Mission Treasure Trail.

Head to the Craft Shed for Paint Pots and Parties. See what life was like from the Stone Age to the Saxons at Butser Ancient Farm, while saying hi to sheep, pigs and goats on the working farm. Or ride the steam trains at the Watercress Line in Arlesford.

Pet-a-paca at Dunreyth Alpacas and walk them through the woods. Go Ape on the high ropes at Alice Holt. Take a scenic hack through the Sussex Downs from Willowbrook Riding Centre. Or see over 2000 bugs, parrots, piranhas and penguins at Birdworld.

Explore acres of ancient woodland, landscaped parkland and friendly animals at the award-winning Staunton Country Park. Or be brave and get down to Hollycombe, Britain’s largest traditional fairground collection, with almost all rides steam-powered, including the Razzle Dazzle, the world’s first ‘white knuckle’ ride.

For the grown ups

There’s a fine selection of boutique and independent shops both in Arlesford and Petersfield, a rich history on offer at the museum and a grand past to dip into at Uppark House and Garden. If you’ve got the energy, take a boat trip on the Heath Pond or explore the inviting landscape of the South Downs.

Take a peek at what life was like in Britain 3000 years ago at Butser Ancient Farm, an experimental archaeological research site complete with roundhouses and a Roman villa. Reconstructed from actual archaeological evidence, it comes with crops and livestock from the period.

See the place where one of Britain’s best-loved authors wrote and revised all her major fiction, at Jane Austen’s House Museum. Or admire an authentic 17th-century gentleman’s garden at Petersfield Physic garden, with plants, shrubs and trees all known in England at the time.

Get some fresh air in Queen Elizabeth Country Park, featuring 600 hectares of dramatic downland and beautiful woodland. Then get more at the Sustainability Centre, with its 55 acres of woodland and natural chalk downland. Or hit the shops at Rams’ Walk and refresh with a coffee at Costa.
