Head to Dorset Museum to learn more about fine art, textiles, costume, local history and photography, and enjoy a major collection on local author Thomas Hardy.

Like the outdoors? You’ll love Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre. Try sailing, kayaking, rock climbing, orienteering, forest adventures, coasteering and more. Or take on 140sqm of wall, cave, overhangs, slabs and cracks at The Hangout Climbing Gym on the island of Portland.

Catch the latest flicks at Cineworld in Weymouth or the Odeon or Plaza in Dorchester. Meet and feed animals including birds, pigs, ducks, rabbits, ponies and goats at Kingston Maurward Animal Park, and enjoy a play barn and themed gardens. Or visit The Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, a 65-acre ape and monkey sanctuary centre.

Ride the Weymouth Bay Miniature Railway around Lodmoor Park, home to a small café, pub, picnic area, pirate-ship playpark, outdoor gym and six-acre sealife centre.

Live life to the full right from the door, with cycling routes along Dorset’s winding lanes or along the Esplanade at Weymouth. Stick around for a fish-and-chip supper on the harbour wall. Or head just over the horizon to Chesil Cove, the southerly point of Chesil Beach and a haven for scuba divers.

Get your gym fix at Redlands Sports Centre. Ride horses from Wey Meadow Stables. Blast clay from the sky with a shotgun at The Big Shoot. Enjoy panoramic views on the lovely downland Came Down Golf Course. Or bring your boots and walk the South Dorset Ridgeway or the undulating coastal path from Bowleaze.
