All’s well that ends well

Just ten minutes from the M40 in Shakespeare country, yet light years from the mayhem of modern life, Mount Pleasant is a family bolthole for 12 with mischief on its mind. Play mini tennis. Magic up a movie on the giant screen. Finish the day off bubbling away in the hot tub. All’s well that ends well, as the Bard would say.

Family fun among the log-lit luxury

Welcome to Shakespeare country, where 18th-century charm meets 21st century convenience at Mount Pleasant. Charm… and tradition as well. Hampton Lucy lies quietly midway between Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick, named after the Lucy family, who owned the adjoining National Trust site, Charlecote Park.

You’re just ten minutes from the M40, yet light years away from the mayhem of modern life. Sleeping 12 in six delicious bedrooms, Mount Pleasant comes with perfect English manners allied with a cheeky sideways grin. Because there’s plenty of family fun to be had here among the log-lit luxury.

Serve up a little glee in the one-acre garden on the half-size tennis court. This is tennis without the pressure, literally. Pressureless mini-red balls make the game easy. Stay outside to simmer gently beneath the stars in the sunken hot tub. Towel off and hang around on the deck for a nightcap beneath the night-time canopy.

Inside, among the ceiling roses and the thick carpets, you can catch your favourite shows on the Sky Q TVs. Or make it a movie night with the 2.7-metre screen. Stream at speed with the two wifi networks. Sing along to the Sonos as you stir and simmer on the Aga. Or just bag a book and a quiet corner. Shakespeare would approve.

Gardens and grounds

There’s an acre of endless fun here for children to frolic and for grown-ups to take their foot off the pedal. Get all English and play a little cricket or croquet on the striped summer lawn. Knock the pressure-less balls around the half-size tennis court. Fire up the gas barbie and dine on the deck.

The seven-person hot tub comes sunken into the deck. Enjoy a little fizz as you bubble and boil under the stars. Towel off, wrap up in throws and make a night of it. Tomorrow’s always a day off in these parts.

Living spaces

The sumptuous luxury at Mount Pleasant comes log-fired. Choose your living room, throw another log on the fire and put your feet up. Wiggle your toes and flex your fingers on the remote: you’ve got recordable Sky Q packages, BT Sport and two 46” LED TVs to watch them on.

Looking for a little more wow? How about a cinema room with 2.7-metre screen for your films or footie? Stock up on popcorn, keep your glasses topped up and enjoy a little giant-sized immersive magic. Broadband? You’ve got two wifi networks over SIM cards in EE 4G devices. Around 20Mbs should make for satisfactory streaming and surfing.

Need more diversions? You’ve got Blu-ray players in the main living room and cinema room, a Sonos sound system in the kitchen so you can sing while you simmer, and even a Yamaha electric piano for musical mayhem. If it all gets too much, bookworms can raid the dining-room bookcase or the cabinet outside the second living room.

Cooking and dining

Dine like kings and queens beneath the beams in front of the original wooden fireplace with the logs burning in the grate. There’s room for ten here and you’ll get six more around the kitchen dining table. Prefer your dining al-fresco? There’s a gas barbie and two patio tables for 14 out among the birds and the big skies.

Load your American-style fridge-freezer with local goodies from The Farm in Snitterfield and wine from Underwood’s, then get going on the oil-fired Aga with ceramic hob. Need more firepower? There’s another electric oven in the kitchen. If you’d rather sip wine than flip burgers, ask for our friends from Shakespeare Catering or Posh Nosh.

Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose will all deliver, or order up the best in Indian takeaway food from Aladdin’s in Tiddington. Eat or drink within a short stagger at The Boar’s Head in the village for Cumberland sausages or wholetail scampi. Or head into Stratford for a rack of lamb or king prawn, crab and chorizo linguine at The Encore.

Restaurants? Baraset Barn’s menu looks lip-smackingly lovely, peppered with heritage beetroot, crumbled gorgonzola and Devon crab. Or head to The Vintner in Stratford for chicken breast toasted in lime butter or lamb shank with Dauphinoise potatoes and vine tomatoes. Wash it down with classics from a world-class wine list.

Mount Pleasant sits just ten minutes from the M40, but there’s plenty of green stuff between hither and thither, so you’ll sleep as well as the logs in nearby Hampton Wood. Pick from six beautiful bedrooms sleeping 12 (plus four on sofa beds) and enjoy traditional features wrapped around modern luxuries.

Bedroom one is a kingsize en-suite sleeping two, while bedroom two is a double en-suite. Bedroom three offers a double bed plus vaulted ceiling and skylights. You’ll find a family bathroom next door. Bedroom four is also a double served by the family bathroom, as are five and six, both with kingsize beds.

Children Welcome

Keeping kids happy on holiday these days needs to balance lungfuls of fresh air with the tantalising lure of tech. Mount Pleasant manages both with aplomb. As local boy William Shakespeare said, ‘Pleasure and action make the hours seem short’.

The fresh air comes care of one acre of rolling English greenery and a striped lawn that’s perfect for croquet or cricket. Or introduce your kids to tennis with the miniature, easier version – mini-red tennis with pressureless balls on a half-size court. It’s tennis with all the fun and none of the frustration.

The tech fix happens inside. Who needs multiscreen cinema when you’ve got your own cinema room with 2.7-metre screen? Pick a movie or a match, break out the popcorn and make a night of it. Dissenters can opt for the 46” TVs in the living rooms. Scroll through recordable shows on a full Sky Q package, including BT Sport.

Bring your screens and stream at will with the two wifi networks running over SIM cards in EE 4G devices at around 20Mbs. Enjoy Bluetooth music on the Sonos sound system. Or get all traditional in this whimsical English country house, get a fire going and stay up late with a pack of cards. We don’t do school nights around here.

A gorgeous house throughout, we had a lovely break. The gardens are stunning and the terrace and hot tub were a welcome treat at the end of the day. We will be back for a longer stay next time! - Niamh
