Play lords and ladies

Join the nobility. Leave the present century and all its pressures behind and move up the social scale, to live a grander life at Carlton Towers. Wander freely around the 250-acre woodland estate, sink deeply into indulgent fine-dining experiences, or pick a spot by the fire and let the history and grandeur seep into your soul.

This is Yorkshire at its finest. The grand, lush, rolling scenery wraps around the ivy-clad walls of this most gracious of ancestral seats, infusing you with a calm that you’ll pack in your case and take home. So you feel armed against the daily commute and the crush and rush of modern living.

Sleeping 22, Carlton Towers comes rich in architecture and artwork, and palatial décor reflects the all-encompassing sense of history and rampant nature. Things are big here beneath the ramparts and clock tower. You’ll get 31 around the dining table. Need more chairs? We have 100, and can seat 50 on the terrace. Six ovens enough? Four fridges?

Come for the croquet on the lawn, for the gentle swish of the swing under the tree, for picnics by the lake. Be mesmerised by board games lit by crackling logs in the hearth and the tinkle of the piano keys on a quiet evening. Be enchanted by the silence and serenity. Whatever happens in life, you’ll always have Carlton Towers.

Gardens and grounds

Wander the 250 acres of parkland and woodland, eat out on the terrace beneath big Yorkshire skies to a backdrop of ivy-decked walls. Sizzle your steaks on the gas barbecue. Pop open a nice drop of fizz from the local wine merchant, House and Townend.

Take a picnic down to the lake, idle some hours away on the swing beneath the tree, play croquet on the lawn. Let the serenity of the surroundings imbue your spirit with a deep-seated calm.

Living spaces

On the outside, Carlton Towers looks like Buckingham Palace. Things are no less grand on the inside, with traditional features, rich architecture, palatial décor and ancestral artwork. Pick your best spot by the crackling fire and be enchanted by the pace of an earlier age and the nobility of the surroundings.

Carlton Towers might be traditional, but there’s nothing getting in the way of modern living. The BT Wi-Fi won’t stop you posting to Instagram and there’s Bluetooth for you to set your soundtrack. There’s a TV for Freeview viewing, so scribble down your passwords if you fancy Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Dip into the books and board games, stay up late for cards and charades, fill the ancient spaces with the gentle sound of the piano hammers hitting home. Chat, play, relax, put your phone down awhile. At Carlton Towers, you can have as much or as little of the modern world as the mood takes.

Cooking and dining

Part of the aristocratic experience is surely being waited on hand and foot. So if you don’t feel compelled to busy yourself around the six ovens, 24 hob burners and four fridges, speak to us about booking our pro chefs for a one-off celebration or a fully catered break. We’ll get the whites ready.

If you do prefer to avail yourself of the rather lovely facilities, you can enjoy the fruits of your labours around a dining table that seats 31. Need extra chairs? One hundred enough? Prefer to eat al fresco? The terrace seats around 50. There’s a gas barbecue for that aromatic, open-air feel.

Eat out at great pubs such as The Green Rawcliffe, with its wagu signature steak, lamb rump and pork schnitzel, or The Black Dog in Camblesforth for Barnsley chop or twice-cooked pork belly. Or try the 15th-century George Inn, home of wings, burgers and grills. Wrap up with cookie-dough sundae.

Beer-battered fish and chips and pea and asparagus panzanella salad are among the seasonal, local produce on offer at Peppered Pig. Or try Sapori 74 for Mediterranean fare that includes char-grilled chicken breast with goats’ cheese and linguine pasta with mixed shellfish.

Children welcome

Which child wouldn’t want to holiday with mum, dad, grandma, grandad and all the siblings and cousins under the sun? Carlton Towers copes magnificently with this. It’s the perfect venue for a multigenerational mash-up. Pile in, bicker over bedrooms and get ready for games that go on way past bedtime.

Outdoors, you’ve got 250 acres of woodland and parkland in which to cultivate free-range kids. Pack a picnic and get down to the lake, play games on the lawn, including croquet, or just kick your legs back and forth on the tree swing. Pack your screens away, gulp some fresh air, absorb some vitamin D.

Inside, everything’s laid on for you to start a probably endless game of hide-and-seek or to stay up on a school night to thrash the family at board games in front of the crackling logs or enjoy movie nights by the telly (bring your passwords). Quieter souls might want to choose a book from the shelf or knock out a sonata on the piano.
