Visit Stratford

The first point of call for any literature lover visiting Stratford has got to be Shakespeare’s Birthplace. Visit this restored, timber-framed house to discover the life story of the world’s most renowned poet and playwright. While you’re here, you can also visit the former home of Anne Hathaway – aka Mrs Shakespeare – with its original features and romantic gardens.

For those with inquisitive minds, the MAD Museum is a mechanical art and design museum and the only permanent venue of its type in the country. With interactive displays designed by artists and inventors all over the world, this quirky attraction features high-tech robots, 3D faces and marble runs – fascinating for all ages.

Stratford is also home to Butterfly Farm, which is the UK’s largest tropical butterfly attraction. With exotic plants, a Minibeast Metropolis and hundreds of free-flying butterflies, this is the perfect rainy-day activity for the whole family. Take a peek at the world’s largest bird-eating tarantula if you dare!

If you’re lucky enough to be in Stratford on a sunny day, why not spend the afternoon down by the Canal Basin? Centrally located between the theatres and the main shopping area, have a picnic in the pretty riverside gardens or take a cruise down the River Avon. You can even hire your own rowing boat to explore the town at your own pace.

Party in Stratford

If you’re visiting Stratford for a special occasion, there’s plenty to do on an evening too. The Royal Shakespeare Company runs three theatres – The Other Place, The Swan Theatre and the flagship Royal Shakespeare Theatre, where you can enjoy modern-day portrayals of the Bard’s best work. If you don’t want to watch a show, take a tour for scenic views from the tower or enjoy a meal in its rooftop restaurant.

Alternatively, Stratford is home to a variety of traditional pubs. The Old Thatch Tavern is a historic landmark which predates even Shakespeare. Enjoy a quiet drink in the courtyard or some classic pub grub at this charming thatched-roof pub. The Dirty Duck – originally The Black Swan – is another popular drinking place which is frequented by actors and theatregoers alike. Judi Dench has even wet her whistle here!

For something livelier, Shakespeare Street nightclub features a stylish cocktail bar downstairs and a resident DJ playing dance hits and R&B upstairs for late night partiers. If it’s music you’re after, The Keys also hosts live bands four nights a week.

Stratford is also home to an award-winning Ghost Walk that can be taken on an evening for added scare-factor. This eerie walking tour of Stratford’s most haunted areas takes places every Saturday night. Learn stories of ghosts, witches, murder and misery through the ages. Be warned – this is not for the faint hearted!
