National Trust walks in Suffolk

The National Trust is responsible for preserving and maintaining some of the most stunning locations in the UK. So much so, that you’ll be spoilt for choice. Here are some of our favourites in Suffolk.

Dunwich Heath, suffolk

Dunwich Heath and Beach

You can choose to walk by the water or trek through flowers and woodland at Dunwich. For little ones, they have discovery trails with animal identification signs along the way. Looking for a walk with a difference? They frequently hold special walks like bat or bird spotting.

Ickworth House on a summer's day in Suffolk.

Ickworth

Ickworth is home to the historical Ickworth House, which used to belong to the first Marquess. You can wander around its gardens, or follow the Ickworth Park Albana walk through lush woodlands. For the more adventurous, there’s also the Trim Trail. Suitable for both adults and children, this path offers obstacles like ladders and leap-frogs along the way.

Best dog-friendly walks in Suffolk

The UK is a nation of dog lovers. If you want to explore the outdoors with man’s best friend then look no further.

Framlingam Castle.

Framlingham

The market town of Framlingham is the perfect place to head with your canine companion. It has a specific dog walk which offers you a chance to see a little of everything including a castle and a wildlife-filled mere. The walk even starts at The Crown Pub if you want to wet your whistle before you set off.

Minsmere Panoramic, Dunwich Heath at Sunrise.

Minsmere to Dunwich

This five-mile loop walk lies at the heart of Suffolk’s Heritage Coast and starts and ends at the cosy Eels Foot Pub. The trail covers Minsmere Nature Reserve and coastal paths, so you and your furry friend will have plenty to stop, look and sniff at. It should be noted that some of the route near Dunwich Heath requires dogs to be on a short lead due to nesting birds.

Top Suffolk walks for prams

Flatford Mill, the scene painted by John Constable.

Flatford

Flatford was the inspiration for some of landscape painter John Constable’s scenes, making it an ideal place to walk and take in the sights. You can stroll around an exhibition of his work, feed the ducks or check out their second-hand ‘book nook’ for literary treasures at bargain prices.

Historic medieval houses in Lavenham, Suffolk.

Lavenham

Lavenham is known for being one of the wealthiest towns in Tudor England, and more recently for appearing on film as the birthplace of Harry Potter. This picturesque village is home to some of the most well-preserved Tudor buildings, and an easy woodland walk. Along the way, try to spot some of the 24 varieties of butterflies in the area, and stop at the tea shop when you’re done.

Walks with weird history

Suffolk isn’t just home to walks through flowering meadows and sun-dappled streams. Some have a sinister history. Brave believers, cynics or those with a morbid curiosity – these unusual walks are definitely for you.

Early morning with sunrise in pine forest.

Brandon Country Park

Brandon Hall was owned by Edward Bliss in 1820. Among the rare flora and fauna growing in the grounds he built a gothic mausoleum. It was intended to be the resting place for himself and his wife, but they were moved to Brandon Cemetery in the early 20th century. Today the mausoleum is supposedly haunted by the ghost of Edward’s nephew, Baron Borretto. You can pass the mausoleum on the park’s six-mile Firecrest trail, but be back before it gets dark!

FO spaceship landing in Rendlesham forest!

Rendlesham Forest

Rendlesham Forest has 3 different walks to try. But one is particularly infamous, taking you to the location of one of the UK’s most famous alleged sighting of UFOs. In late December 1980 over 3 nights, RAF Servicemen saw strange lights descending into the forest and a glowing, metallic object that flew through the trees. The UFO trail features information boards and a UFO structure modelled on witness descriptions at the end of the three-mile walk.
